Our guests discuss the road to net zero and what UK Government are actively doing to meet the upcoming targets and objectives. Mike offers a valuable insight to how industry feel about the semiconductor shortage and discusses with Darren how Industry and Government can work together.

What is TechWorks TV?

TechWorks releases a new series of programs that hosts interviews with industry leaders as they discuss the emerging trends and challenges within the Deep Tech Industry. Covering topics such as the Semiconductor Shortage, Autonomous Vehicles, Cyber Security and more.

The Deep Tech industry is a world that is constantly evolving and innovating, however, in recent times it has been forced to adapt and overcome challenges, particularly due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. TechWorks continuously work closely with its members and the wider community and are in a strong position to discuss the opportunities and challenges faced by industry.

TechWorks TV aims to stimulate discussion and debate on topics that industry leaders are passionate about. Episode 1 welcomes TechWorks Chairman, Sir Hossein Yassaie, SEMI Europe President, Laith Altimime and IC Resources Founder, Neil Dickins. The guests provide their views on the COVID-19 Pandemic and BREXIT from a UK and European perspective and how we can continue to work together going forward.

Our Speakers

Mike Hawes

Mike Hawes became SMMT Chief Executive on 2 September 2013.

He has over 30 years’ experience in policy and public affairs, the majority of which has been spent in the automotive industry. He joined SMMT from Bentley Motors where he held a number of communications, corporate and public affairs roles.

Prior to that, he also worked for both Toyota and, Bentley’s parent company, Volkswagen AG, where he developed the European and global knowledge needed for this challenging role.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is one of the largest and most influential trade associations in the UK. Its resources, reputation, and unrivalled automotive data place it at the heart of the UK automotive industry.

SMMT is the voice of the UK motor industry, supporting and promoting its members’ interests, at home and abroad, to government, stakeholders and the media.

SMMT represents more than 800 automotive companies in the UK, providing them with a forum to voice their views on issues affecting the sector, helping to guide strategies and build positive relationships with government and regulatory authorities.

Darren Capes

Darren Capes FIET FIHE, has over 30 years’ experience working in Local and Central Government. A qualified civil engineer, Darren’s career has encompassed most areas of municipal engineering with particular emphasis on design, construction and evaluation; transport planning, and technology development and implementation.

Darren has a particular interest in emerging transport technologies and the readiness of local highway authorities for the challenges that new vehicle and data technologies will bring. His previous role as Transport Systems Manager for City of York Council focussed on this area as does his current role, leading local authority ITS policy at the Department for Transport.

Darren is Chair of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Transport Policy Panel and is on the Council of the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE). He also manages the national Transport Technology Forum and speaks regularly at events in the UK and beyond, including to the House of Commons and Lords Select Committees on the subjects of Smart Cities, current and emerging transport technology.

Alan Banks

Alan started his career at British Telecom where he trained as a Telecommunications Electronics engineer. He joined Ford Motor Company in 1985 where he held a number of management positions within the IT Department delivering Telecommunications and Product Development systems developing Ford products in Europe.

After completing an International Service Assignment in the United States in the early 2000’s he returned to Visteon in the UK where he was the European IT Manager.

He held a number of senior positions within Visteon delivering Vehicle Cockpit Electronic Programs and after 35years completed his career at Visteon as the Engineering Director responsible for delivering cockpit electronics for Ford and Jaguar Land Rover.

Alan is a member of the Automotive Council’s Intelligent Connected Vehicle Working Group and is the lead for Power Electronics at the Automotive Council.

He is passionate about growing Electronics capability in the UK and believes strongly that connected communities and collaboration are the key to exploiting successful partnerships enabling the exploration of the wealth of opportunity it brings with new and exciting emerging technology markets.

Alan was awarded the TechWorks ‘Lifetime Contribution to Industry’ award in 2017.
