Spring Budget 2021: Chancellor doubles the cash incentives for employers to take on apprentices

Spring Budget 2021: Chancellor doubles the cash incentives for employers to take on apprentices as part of a package designed to put skills at the heart of economic recovery.

In August 2020, Rishi Sunak introduced a government incentives scheme for employers to encourage them to hire more apprentices (see here:  Incentive payments for hiring a new apprentice – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).  These incentives included £2,000 to hire an apprentice between 16 to 24 years old and £1,500 to hire an apprentice aged 25 and over.

The scheme was due to end on 31st March; however, in the Spring Budget, the Chancellor announced the extension of the incentives until September 2021, along with a further boost to the incentives for employers.

Between 1st April and 30th September employers will now receive £3,000 per new apprentice hire, regardless of the apprentice’s age. The payment is in addition to the £1,000 employers already receive for hiring an apprentice aged 16 to 18 years old or those under 25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan.

By boosting financial support, the Government hopes to see a sharp uptick in the number of new apprenticeships. Only 25,420 employers have submitted claims for the bonus as of 1 February 2021, well below the target of 100,000.
