Monthly Update from TechWorks CEO, Alan Banks

27th March 2022 | News

This month I would like to discuss upcoming events, our latest publications and the launch of TechNES amongst other things.

Supporting Ukraine

TechWorks supports the actions of the international community to bring an end to the conflict between the Ukraine & Russia through all diplomatic, financial and trading mechanisms as well as the provision of specific support to the people of Ukraine. Inevitably, there will be an impact on the sector and TechWorks will continue to support its members during this time.

Semiconductor shortage

The ongoing global chip shortage continues to dominate our industry, as this is a complex situation that was exacerbated due to the fluctuations in schedules by some industries and significant changes in demand for consumer electronics during the pandemic. We will continue to monitor the situations and continue to work with our members to help secure supply wherever we can.

Launch of TechNES

We are pleased to announce the launch of TechNES – the Technology Network for Embedded Systems. Emerging from NMI ES, TechNES is designed to take the group forward. Focussing on Embedded Systems, allows us to involve companies with a wider scope, offering working groups and collaboration for anything from IC design all the way through to the end system user and everything in between. The UK market is wide and diverse, and innovation comes in all shapes and sizes, by looking at a larger community base, allows us to identify deep tech and technological advances across a spectrum of industries. By continuing the ethos of TechWorks connected communities, TechNES can really help to drive collaboration and change within the industry. The group will form the backbone of all electronics design and will be looking to identify key market sectors for focus and growth, such as Quantum Computing, AI&ML, AgriTech and Green Energy with the aim to create vibrant communities, not only grouped by technology but also by market sector.

AI/ML workshops being run by our TechNES team

I was delighted to see the first AI/ML workshop, run TechNES Director Steve Drew and hosted by Thales, was held on Thursday 10th March. This was the first AI/ML workshop of its kind, bringing together industry to focus on key areas of AI development.

The workshop attendees looked at creating application guides and related materials that are defined by and can be referenced to industry. There will be 3 workstreams within this group:

1. AI Best Practice
2. Use of AI in IC Development
3. Use of AI for System Design

The team plan to hold a number of these workshops throughout the year and will publish the results, with some interesting conversations, discussion points and interesting challenges ahead. If you’d like to join this activity email Steve here.

TechWorks Summer BBQ

After the success of the TechWorks Industry Summit & Awards Gala Dinner in December last year, we will be hosting the first Annual TechWorks Summer BBQ in July. This event is a chance to bring our members and potential new members together and enjoy the British summer in a picturesque location. There will be freshly cooked food from the BBQ, along with a few refreshments, some dancing and a chance to meet up with old friends and new. The date and location will be announced soon, and we look forward to seeing you all there. If you haven’t already seen the videos for the Industry Summit and Awards Gala Dinner, please click here.

Events

This year we have more events than ever at TechWorks. We will see events from across our Communities throughout the UK, bringing our members and guests together to update you on what we’re doing this year and beyond, as well as having a chance to catch up after the last 2 years we’ve had. You will see throughout this month’s Newsletter that we have a mixture of both physical and virtual events and we hope to see you there.
